Day 9: Oops!

Usha swore under her breath as ink shot out of the passing squid and all over her hair in a cloud. Her hair may have already been inky black, but that did not mean she wanted squid to spew it all over her head.

Maybe if she was lucky, the blueish hue unique to squid ink would streak her hair. Then her mother couldn’t be mad–she technically didn’t use hair dye!

But her mother would never care, even if Usha showed up with bright pink hair and claimed she only ate shrimp from now on like those birds–what were they called…flamingos?

“Hey, watch where you spray!” Usha swatted at the offending squid.

“Oops, sorry!” it swam away quickly before Usha could swat at it again with a closer arm or tentacle.

The youngest daughter of the sea witch watched the little squid go. She wondered for the hundredth time what it would be like to swim away from her mother’s area of the ocean.

But beyond the coral that bordered her mother’s domain was a harsher one, at least that’s what she had been told. Beyond that coral lay the rest of the sea, ruled by a false king, the usurper Triton–her uncle.

And he was less even less inclined to overlook mistakes as Ursula.

Thanks for reading!

Until tomorrow.
